Render value in black and white on a separate Gel layer. Don't forget to fill it with white first, so you don't have any random artifacts

STEP 3:

On another separate Gel layer, add in colour, feel free to be sloppy

STEP FOUR:

Drop all the layers and then add a new one, and render the image to your own content

Today, Ryan did a demonstration of one of his older paintings by repainting it from a B&W render. He asked us to open up Painter and follow along with some robot. I didn't have anything with me, so I just semi redrew his robot head and went with it

I really liked following his method, it was exciting to learn. I'm definitely going to be incorporating what I learned into future works.

The rules were to spend about 5 minutes on each expression. Let it be known that I draw on the right side first, working my way from bottom to top. My wife numbered them left to right

I had a Flash Animation class with an excellent professor, Ryan Simmons. I had no knowledge of flash before hand, so he really had his work cut out for him. Also, I struggled with the tools in the program a bit, more vector art type stuff that I'm not accustomed to.

But still, the class was fantastic, and I learned so much from Ryan. Our final project was to put everything we were taught into one little animated sequence; so here's what I came up with.

Note: It's unfinished because of time restraints, and I had to toss in a walking animation so I could get graded for that. So that's the random bit you'll see

Starting to really get tired of my subject; I need to put more effort into these. One thing I've been really happy about is that my fellow classmates have been improving so much, it's a joy to watch them flourish.

In class speed painting with a sad side story. So I guess this is Bouguereau Gaiden. Anyways, laptop wouldn't start up when the painting time began, it was in the eternal startup mode. So I turned it off, then back on and waited some more. This took from 15 to 20 minutes.

Peter calls the finish time at the hour mark, and we all save and walk around. When I get back to it, I decide to keep working since I missed a good chunk o' time. After making some progress that I was happy with, the screen goes blank.

For some reason, NOW it chooses to restart. I think I'm hearin' what Justin Gerard preached...CURSE YOU BILL GATES!

Peter had us do a speed painting for 1 hour. Unfortunately, there is some invisible energy barrier that causes my laptop to switch to Right Handed mode every time I power it up at school. The usual fix is to restart, which I did; and I see 'updating, please don't turn off your laptop' LOL

So this is somewhere under an hour

The rules were Black and White and use only one brush. I desperately wanted to use a blender but found out that if I increased the size of my brush it sort of softened some edges.

My sister used to work at Cookies by Design, and every time I would visit her, she let me make my own cookie. This was maybe 2007, I thought I'd make a Sonic Cookie.

I was so pleased with my handy work that I wrapped it up in saran wrap and took it home a couple states over. As soon as I arrived at home, I took one low quality picture with my Xbox camera, put it aside and then it vanished soon after. Some say my sister ate it. I choose to believe that Sonic is still the fastest thing alive

Sounds really futuristic and awesome; but this is actually some old stuff I sketched in the year 2000, which is practically a million years ago...

Next up, a bit of a revelation. I was a big fan of Starcraft and have doodled a bunch of stuff from it here and there. I later found out that Don Seegmiller was one of the artists for Brood War which made me realise; Don has been influencing me artistically for YEARS! It's a shame I didn't start learning from him until 9 years later!

This is also before I actually lived in Japan and learned the language; so ignore the nonsense written here and there. This is all Bic pen and some kind of colour pencil

This isn't a post about a classic movie, though it probably would be more interesting if it were. Today I went to the dentist and had my teeth tortured. Then I rushed to class and accidentally dropped my stylus in some gutter water. I snatched it up, dried it off and realised in class that I had forgotten a USB cable to connect my Wacom Tablet. Which was fine because the battery on my laptop was about to die and I had apparently forgotten my charger.

So what does one do in that situation? You better believe it involves drawing while Don is in the room.

This first one is an image from Don's Figure painting tutorial, though after the battery died I was left attempting to go from memory...

Then of course, random objects from Don's office.

After the two weeks of learning how to paint an alien, we were given a weekend to produce another. As crazy as it sounds, the process was actually pretty fast. It's amazing how efficiently you can render when you have some kind of idea as to what you're doing.

A blast from the past

I was painting the basement of my parent's house today and stumbled across these ol' paintings. I did them when I was working at the Wynnsong Theater in 1999, which means I was still a teenager. The only thing I took notice of in Episode 1 was Darth Maul. Figures he was designed by the great Iain McCaig

And then this one a bit later. I remember being okay with VHS quality at the time. My little box set came with a concept art booklet, with lot's of McCaig's drawings. I loved it so much but someone noticed it and mentioned how cool they thought it was. I think you can figure out what happened next :(

On January 10th, of this year my father passed away early in the morning from a heart attack. I found out at school after leaving my first class that day, around 11:00am. I excused myself from the friends I was with and wandered the halls at UVU for a bit, not sure what my next move should be. Eventually I made my way up to Perry's office, and asked if I could talk to him.

Perry noticed that I was disturbed and asked me what was wrong. I told him what had happened and began to break down a bit, informing him that I had no idea what to do at that point. He told me that I need to go support my mother, and straight away drove me to Berg Mortuary where she was already taking care of the necessary funeral arrangements.

After offering some words of comfort, Perry left us and we dove right into measurements, types of coffins, locations etc, it was all a blur.
Upon returning to her home, I began to go over in my head of what I could do for my dad to help make his viewing more special. I quickly decided that a portrait was a good way to do that, and to have it displayed during the event. I began to look through old photos of his life, from the younger years to the most recent, and was torn on which one I should do. Eventually I realised I would have to do at least four to capture his life more effectively, which also meant I wouldn't have enough time to put into them, because the viewing was in four days.

Using a blue watercolour pencil and brush that Don Seegmiller had introduced to me, I went to work. This is the result.

It was a beautiful service, many came and shared their love and support through stories, songs, testimonies of God's plan and so on. I think my dad would have liked the tributes paid to him. He was always willing to laugh and make light of any situation.

His life was full of struggle, turmoil alongside happiness, and in the end, triumph. I will never forget his example of service and devotion, and will do my best to uphold his name. To my dad, oute alofa ia te 'oe.

After many failed attempts, Don threw one out about a frog in the throat. So I went back to the drawing board and came up with these.

Since I'm on a retro kick, and a huge Sega fan, I decided to share this old Sonic the Hedgehog comic I did when I was 13 years old. It's in a composition book and done with colour pencils. Some of the images I took straight from Sega Visions magazine, or from the games. You can tell the ones that I just pulled out of my head (they suck more haha)

I'm a huge Phantasy Star fan, since the beginning in 1988 on the Sega Master System. I followed the series up until now, and had drawn some fan art along the way.

I had agreed to do a picture for a fellow's Valentines date, though with all the homework piling up I began to push it back. Finally, I decided to do Cupid a favour and push it out. Here it is, the request was to make them Super heroish so yeah

*My good friend who commissioned this passed away from cancer later that year. He was a great person, and loved by all who knew him. I'm glad I was able to help him out with one last time.

Here's our first take home assignment, which was to create a rendition of René Magritte's Son of Man piece. Our instructions were to keep the background as close as possible, but to alter the rest as we saw fit. Hence, the Son of Leo was borne.

First off, I tried a Utah Jazz thing with some tracing paper; I thought it would be neat because it's nearly see through anyways, but it didn't really work out. So I coloured in the paper parts with a Sharpie and it came out decently enough. I don't like it though

So next I decided to get some items I had laying around the house that were glass/plastic etc and started making some random designs. Pretty neat I thought.
